1 PicADay Project: Day 358

According to the U.S. Treasury Fact Sheet on Coins and Currency the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on U.S. coins because of increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War. Secretary of the Treasury Salmon P. Chase received many appeals from devout people, throughout our country, urging that the United States recognize the Deity of God on it’s coins. The first letter dated November 13, 1861 was written to Secretary Chase by Rev. M. R. Watkinson, a minister from Rileyville, PA.  It read:

Dear Sir: You are about to submit your annual report to the Congress respecting the affairs of the national finances.
One fact touching our currency has hitherto been seriously overlooked. I mean the recognition of the Almighty God in some form on our coins.
You are probably a Christian. What if our Republic were not shattered beyond reconstruction? Would not the antiquaries of succeeding centuries rightly reason from our past that we were a heathen nation? What I propose is that instead of the goddess of liberty we shall have next inside the 13 stars a ring inscribed with the words PERPETUAL UNION; within the ring the all seeing eye, crowned with a halo; beneath this eye the American flag, bearing in its field stars equal to the number of the States united; in the folds of the bars the words GOD, LIBERTY, LAW.
This would make a beautiful coin, to which no possible citizen could object. This would relieve us from the ignominy of heathenism. This would place us openly under the Divine protection we have personally claimed. From my hearth I have felt our national shame in disowning God as not the least of our present national disasters.
To you first I address a subject that must be agitated.

What if Rev. M.R. Watkins could see our country now?  God have mercy on us!

If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.  2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)

Inspiration for My Next Blog Project

I can’t believe that I have only have 33 days left for this project.  At the beginning I wasn’t sure if I’d keep it going, but I did. 🙂  It seems that I just began a few weeks ago.

So I’ve been thinking about what I want to do next after this project and thanks to my friend, Christopher Phillips, who recently posted the following excerpt,  I have confirmation of what I was thinking about all along.  The words in this statement made me cry and really spoke to me and I can’t wait to see what God gives to me to share over the next year.  So I can’t really say what it will look like specifically.  I just know that I want my photography and my blog to be inspired by God to encourage and uplift people and to allow others to see God through the beauty he has created.

We need more people to shine God’s light because light ALWAYS overpowers the darkness.

In order to communicate the message entrusted to her by Christ, the church needs art.  Art must make perceptible, and as far as possible attractive, the world of the spirit, or the invisible, of God.  It must therefore translate a unique capacity to take one or other facet of the message and translate it into colors, shapes, and sounds which nourish the intuition of those who look or listen.  It does so without emptying the message itself of its transcendent value and its aura of mystery…  In Christ, God has reconciled the world to himself.  All believers are called to bear witness to this; but it is up to you, men and women who have given your lives to art, to declare with all the wealth of your ingenuity that in Christ the world is redeemed: the human person is redeemed, the human body is redeemed, and the whole creation which, according to Saint Paul, ‘awaits impatiently the revelation of the children of God’ is redeemed…  This is your task.  Humanity in every age, and even today, looks to works of art to shed light upon its path and destiny…  Beauty is a key to the mystery and a call to transcendence.  It is an invitation to savor life and to dream of the future…  Artists of the world, may your many different paths all lead to that infinite Ocean of beauty where wonder becomes awe, exhilaration, unspeakable joy.

“Give us dew to favor Your land, grant us a blessing of Your joy. Make us strong with plentiful grain and wine. Restore Jerusalem, Your delight, as flowers are renewed by dew. Let this be a good year for dew, crowned with proud and beautiful fruit. May the city of Jerusalem, once empty, be turned into a crown that sparkles like the dew.”
